Amazing to see it come to life. One of the very few things I miss about living in SoCal was being allowed to crawl all over the ship, and see all the cool Behind The Scenes things.
BZ, shipmates!
Admiral Yamamoto infamously said "You cannot invade the mainland United States. There would be a man with a rifle behind every blade of grass."
And so it should be, a nation of riflemen....
Started this post on Monday, then came down with a head cold, which is now progressing South. Feeling better, but still a bit woozy...... To...
That was really awesome! Put a lump in my throat and made my heart beat a little harder. Thanks for sharing this, drjim.
ReplyDeleteYou all be safe and God bless.
You're welcome, Linda. I worked with Mike Gescher many times. Great guy!
DeleteI still appreciate the behind-the-scenes tour that you gave me of the USS Iowa. Super cool!
ReplyDeleteYou're very welcome. "Civvies" aren't usually allowed down On Broadway, let alone into Forward Plot wher the computing equipment and the triggers for the guns are, like you saw. I'm just sorry I allowed Old_NFO to get Shanghai'd by one of our Navy vets the day he came down to see her.

DeleteWell done! And a LOT of work went into making that happen...
ReplyDeleteWhen she first got to LA, and was running on a generator, they didn't have enough power to do anything with the turrets. You can use hand cranks to raise/lower the guns and rotate the turret, but Good Gravy that takes a lot of grunt. Now it's all a question of scheduling since she's on Shore Power.
