Had my son help me remove the ceiling light fixture in the Radio Room here, and then we replaced it with a combo fan/light. It gets uncomfortably warm back here in the Summer on sunny days, and the little room fan I propped up on the chest freezer in here was inconvenient.
Got one of the these "Hunter" fans from the HD store....
I also have another one to hang in the dining room, but it's a bit different, and made by a different company. They're both chinesium, but represent different points in the price spectrum. The Hunter fan was very nicely packed, with good quality, good sized hardware, and a very good instruction booklet that helped a first-time-fan-hanger get the project finished.
The other fan was packed with very cheap styrofoam, the kind that crumbles when you look at it, some of the hardware is chintzy, and the instruction book has errors in it, which could have thrown me if I hadn't installed the Hunter fan first.
The really annoying thing is that the Hunter was about half the price of the the other one.
Son is getting settled in and decompressing a bit from the trip. He'd like to find some kind of job in "Transportation", perhaps driving a Pilot Car, or maybe some warehouse work. He starts looking in earnest on Monday, even if we have to start prodding him. He and TLG have hit it off, and Pebbles was ecstatic to see somebody from the Old Hood show up....
The NLG is almost up to 6 pounds, and has been off Supplemental O2 for a bit, but was put back on it yesterday. Not sure when he'll be released to go home, but the Doctors are very happy with his progress.
Short term there are lots of jobs on Craigslist. Long term he needs to get a Colorado CDL. A DOT physical sson after will open doors.
ReplyDeleteGlad he is here safe and sound.
He's going to get his CDL Monday, and the truck gets smogged and licensed on Tuesday or Wednesday.
DeleteI'll tell him to check CL.
PSA.
ReplyDeleteWe installed a ceiling fan directly over our bed. All our ceilings are 7.5 feet tall.
That brought on a few changes.
You know how you sorta flip the sheets onto the bed when you are making the bed?
Adding a ceiling fan sure changed how we make the bed now. Just saying.
The good news is that neither of us is tall enough to stretch our legs out enough to make contact with the ceiling Cuisinart when we are laying in bed.
Although I've not added any warning signage to the bedroom, jumping on the bed is now forbidden.
The following may be considered NSFW.
Finally, I was going to say, fanally, certain bedroom acrobatics now present an unacceptable risk of person injury.
We installed a completely new box in the overhead and that box is super secured to the joists.
If you don't make sure of that, then the whirling device in the overhead may become a fan club.
We also installed a fan in the kitchen and it was pure luck that the swing of the cabinet door just missed contacting the blade tip.
NONE of the bedrooms here have a ceiling light fixture, so we don't have to worry about that...
DeleteThe ceiling box for the fan in the Radio/Sun Room was pretty stout. Metal box with a metal ring around it. I tapped the 8-32 holes in the plate before we put the fan up, as the "self tapping" screws included with the fan would have been a PITA to get started in the unthreaded holes.
Ah yes, fans... If you're lucky, it will last three years...
ReplyDeleteNo idea on the reliability of these things, but you may be correct. The fans in the Long Beach house had been there for 15~20 years, and except for bulb changes and cleaning, they never needed anything.
DeletePraise God for the progress NLG is making! That is wonderful. :)
ReplyDeleteWeird about the more expensive fan; but good to know when we are shopping. Hubby wants to replace ours with fans that have a remote control.
Good luck to your son. God bless you all!
Turns out she bought it for $149.95, and not the $219.95 on the HD website.
DeleteI still think the $120 Hunter fan is made better...
