Emergency Comms

I'm writing up a little piece on what to use, and how, for communications after TSHTF. Basically, what things will work reliably for both short-range and long-range radio communications. In the event of a natural or man-made disaster you can pretty much bet your a$$ that the cellphone system will go down, so how do you tell your family and friends you're OK?

  1. good question. I think we'll probably put our CB radios back in action. They haven't seen much use since the 70's but I think every truck in the family has one.

  2. Well, CB radios are OK for 5 or 10 miles, depending on what antennas you're using. The ones that do SSB (Single SideBand) are better, but you're still limited by the amount of power they put out.

  3. Text it'll get through during the sporadic 'up times'.

At 1700 local it's as described in the headline; 30*F, 88% RH, completely overcast, snowing like crazy (small flakes, but lots of them)...
