Gird Your Grid For A Big One, Doc...

We're just getting started into a Major Winter Storm (ZOMG!! SNOWMAGEDDON!!!) this afternoon, where it's currently 2300UTC, 29*, and snowing.

Expected accumulation is 1"~3" this afternoon, 12"~18" overnight, and another 3"~5" Tuesday, for a storm total of sixteen to twenty-six inches of snow. And on top of that, it's forecast to be "blustery", with sustained winds of ~15MPH gusting to near 30MPH.

Low tonight is forecast to be 20*, and low tomorrow night should be around 2*.

The NWS has forecast travel conditions along the I-25 Urban Corridor to be "impossible" at times. That means I-80 will most likely be shutdown, so travel in and out of here is pretty much a NOGO until Tuesday afternoon, maybe.

Out the front door at 1600 local:

And the backyard:

So it'll be a good night to stay in, follow the weather, and just kick back. I've had to work outdoors in weather like this, and it's not pleasant. Downright brutal, in fact. So a tip of the hat to all those who do work out there, and please keep warm.

UPDATE

Backyard at 2000 local time. Compare the patio table for an estimate. Looks like at least 6", and it's just getting cranked up.....

UPDATE

2200 local. Looks like the chairs and tabled will blend together by morning.
And now the forecast is for an addition 13"~19" overnight, with 3"~5" more before noon......I don't think anybody is going anywhere Tuesday morning!

Midnight Update

Still no wind, which is a good thing, as this much powder will drift like crazy. It's right about 26*, with an expected low of 20*, and a high Tuesday of 26*, so it's gonna stay pretty frozen, dry, and driftable.

Wonder what it'll be like in the morning.

  1. The wipers on my Taurus didn't get fixed. No problem, have my truck. Just to be on the safe side, decided to put on the cable chains I've been hauling around for four years. Too big! The size on the box is correct. Can't remember where I got them; surely it was a "deal".

I'm not immobilized, have all season tires that I've driven in snow before, and I only plan a four mile trip in the morning to see the UP 4014 downtown.

Once again I live up to my blog title.

    1. I'd have no qualms driving around most of Fort Collins tomorrow. My Jeep has AWD, and I'm running a set of nearly new Bridgestone Blizzaks, which are a world (and 35 years!) apart from any other "snow tires" I've ever used.

BUT.....I'm smart enough not to go out sight-seeing, or make frivolous trips. Seeing Big Boy isn't frivolous at all, but way outside my comfort to do considering the weather.

    2. It will be parked in Cheyenne for awhile. Hope they have more shop tours but their legal liabilities might be a concern.

    3. I thought I'd signed up for their email list, but I'll have to go check. When my son and I went to the Depot Museum the docent said you've gotta be REALLY fast on the trigger when they announce those tours, as they sell out in hours.

    4. When I did the tour a few years ago I jumped on it the first hour and ended up with the 4th to last ticket. They had 4014 almost completely apart then.

Hope they start on the Challenger next. It last ran pulling the last Ringling Brothers circus train. Have some poor quality pictures of that somewhere.

    1. Just had a bowl of beef stew with some of my bread, and The Little Guy wants me to light a fire.

Yup....a very good night to stay in!

  3. It just started snowing in the Arizona highlands (10:40) and we're going to get a piece of the same StormZilla that is hitting you. The prediction for now to Friday is somewhere between two and three feet. It's enough for the grandkids to play in and enjoy.

  4. Yeah, it's the biggest single snowfall since we moved here. Looks like well over 12" @2350 local time. I'll snap one more at midnight before I hit the rack.

  5. Well, looks like a perfect opportunity to practice safe snow blowing.

Which, of course, means I hope your snow blower is working well.

Might have to bring the shovel in the house, and start from the front door.....
