Bought My Son Some Tools For His Birthday

I asked my son about his tool collection when we were working on his truck a few weeks back. He said he didn't have many, most were mismatched hand me downs, some were worn out, and what he had was pretty much a mish-mash of junk.

This should hold him for a while.....

  1. Nice!

We have two sets - one for home and one for motorhome.

    1. It's always wise to have a set of tools along on a long-distance journey.

  2. My mismatched collection, often sourced one item at a time from the pawn shop bins, is a constant source of frustration. Maybe these guys are on to something worthwhile.

  3. My Dad bought me my first set of good tools, and it's time to pass it on. He didn't do much wrenching in SoCal, but since he's moved here, he's always asking to borrow stuff. He has power tools, but few good hand tools. Eventually he'll wind up with both of my rollers and top chests, but hopefully that's a ways down the road!

    1. I swapped out a jammed 1/2" ratchet of mine while I was there, and grabbed a 10" long 3/8" drive breaker bar, something I've never had. My Dad was a Tool and Die maker, and taught me a few things about tools, so I go for Craftsmen when I can.

  5. Nice, those will last him a lifetime and he will be able to save lots of cash fixing his own stuff. They can make him a living too if he is good at fixing stuff. Nothing wrong with being a maintenance man or mechanic . Thats how I earn my bread

    1. Thanks. He's always been interested in doing stuff, but now that he's out of the L.A. area, he's planning on doing much more.

    2. That and a bag of reasonable quality cordless tools and he's set.

Though, well, buy him an Estwing claw hammer and an Estwing hatchet and that will round out most hand tools.

Why Estwing? Solid metal shank, shock absorbing rubber handle (on the rubber handle models) and practically unbreakable. I haven't managed to damage any of my Estwings and I abuse the snot out of them doing things no normal person should do.

    3. My original Hand Sledge BFH was an Estwing. I keep hearing good things about their hatchets, so I'll have to get one, or two!

    4. Hey Beans......WHICH Estwing hatchet? I didn't know they made that many!

    5. There's the classic camper axe with leather grip, but I prefer anything with a rubber no-slip handle.

Their roofer's hatchet is a good alternative to a tomahawk for a personal defense weapon, or for a camping/hunting axe. Not as much ooomph as a regular hatchet, but still a darn good all-around since it has a hammer head on one side and a flat edge on the other, great for splitting kindling, shingles, breastbones, ribs, throats. ....

Give him a rubber-handled hatchet and the matching light axe and you can't go wrong.

    6. I just ordered the leather handled one for myself. I'll get him the less expensive rubber handled one.

  6. Can you be my dad too? I need some tools, always need tools...

    1. Thanks, Phil. I would have done this years ago, but he never seemed to need anything because his step Dad had a good set of tools.

      Now he has his own....

Keep it civil, please....

Gloomy, Gritty, Grey Day

At 1700 local it's as described in the headline; 30*F, 88% RH, completely overcast, snowing like crazy (small flakes, but lots of them)...
