See Through Engine - 4K Slow Motion Visible Combustion

Ran across this on YouTube while looking for something else.

It's really cool to watch the flame propagation from the ignition point through the chamber.

  1. I wonder if the reason for the strange performance with alcohol is changes in ignition timing, or maybe the lack of back pressure from the exhaust system being removed? There was so much liquid in the chamber, I thought it might lock up (or worse) from trying to compress the liquid.

I also wonder what kind of plastic that was.

    1. Elsewhere (YouTube, I think) someone said that was glass, not plastic.

    2. Sure looked like plastic to me. Towards the end you could see it getting cracked/crazed. Glass wouldn't do that.

He used isopropyl alcohol, and it was only 91%, so there was some water in it. Plus, it's not nearly as volatile as gasoline. He wasn't putting it in the fuel tank, just dumping it in the carb, so when the piston went down, it sucked in liquid.

  2. My expertise with mechanical issues is limited to calling a tow truck. Alas, I should have taken auto shop in high school instead of Spanish.....

I'm leaving here in a few minutes to mail that radio. Only took me, what, a couple of months to do it?

    1. My first day in high-school, my counselor had me pulled from shop class, because "Shop is for dummies, and your going to college!".

Boy, was my Dad ever pissed off when he got home and I told him. When I first got home and told my Mom, shes said "Wait until your Father gets home", and it was the only time I've ever been happy to hear her say that.

Dad called the school and made and appointment, and went had a little talk with the guy.

The next morning they pulled me out of home room and sent me to see the counselor. He gave me a new schedule and said "You got your shop class". He was shaking, and I don't know if he was mad at me or still thinking about the "talk" he had with Dad!

  3. The plastic head looks like Lexan, we use it it some where I work as sight glass in some areas that reach over 500 degrees F bathed in hot oil.

    1. Yep. I wouldn't even want to be in the same building when he started feeding the acetylene to it!
