Brrrrrrr! It's COLD Outside!

First major winter storm heading in tonight. It's currently about SIX degrees, and it'll be -10* or colder at night during the coming week.

It's supposed to bring ~3" of snow, which is a pittance compared to what we've had in the previous years since we moved here. My electrically heated gloves are charging, I finally have a good stocking cap, and I serviced the snow blower last year in between hospital stays.

If you live here I don't have to tell you to watch out while you're out-and-about, and to pack an emergency box sufficient to keep you alive for (minimum) 48 hours. I really feel for the ranchers, farmers, and everybody else who has to work outdoors in this weather. I've done it decades ago, and it was brutal. I remember having my flashlight die out in my hand because the batteries froze. I had to keep it in my jacket, but I didn't want to open my jacket!

Anywhoo.....Keep your head on a swivel, and watch out for frostbite!

  1. You do realize it's all your fault, right?

Because last post you said it hadn't been cold yet. Thus summoning the Cold Beast.

    All your fault.

That's like, when things are quiet, you say something stupid like, "It sure is quiet today." That's right when a train will derail while running over a truck stopped by protestors and something will fly up and knock that airliner out of the air and while you're watching chaos explode around you, you somehow miss a small little statement by your wife and suddenly your hind brain starts playing the Doom music as you wonder exactly why you suddenly detect imminent death, your imminent death.

    1. Thanks, Beans! I always wondered what triggered it.

I'll keep my trap shut from now on when the weather is nice...

    2. We're getting ready to batten down the hatches for sub-freezing temperatures here in North Central Florida. The weatherguessers say two Saturdays from now it's supposed to be a high of 40 and a low of 24. Of course, that's like 8 days away, so weatherguessers...

  3. I'm sorry for you folks that only get this weather from time to time. Consistent weather builds acclimatization. Take good care of yourself, my friend.

    1. It's no big seal compared to what you folks get. We're thankful we have a warm house, food on the table, and loving family. When you have those things, you can accept the weather being brutal on occasion.

  4. We have had several nights with "Hard Freeze Warnings." Temps in the high twenties but cold enough to have to bundle up here in AZ.

Keep warm and don't catch anything.

    1. Even in the desert it can get very cold. I still remember the pix you posted of the snowfall you had.

  5. Grew up there in Germany late 60's and early 70's. Winters can be brutally cold at times. I remember having to feed and water the livestock in subzero temps with night time lows of -25 to -30. And this was back before the days of Gore Tex and other miracle fabrics.

    1. If not Germany, then where? We had Winters that would knock-yer-sox off back in Northern Illinois. Wet, heavy snow, 40mph winds, and high humidity that made the cold just cut through you. 80% of the snow we get here is dry, powdery stuff that's easy to shovel or snow-blow. Not like a 20 pound shovel full that you have to fling...

  7. Yep, and we're seeing the storm down here where we DO NOT have the insulation in houses for single digit temps...

  8. Not looking forward to doing assignments next week out on the plains! Banner isn't thrilled with cold snow between his toes. I have snow booties for him which he hates. Putting them on is a challenge.

    1. Be careful out there! We don't need no stinking slip-and-falls. My Mom knit some snow booties for my Dachshund. He didn't care for them, either!

Been working on this post since right after Thanksgiving. I'm making very good progress on the Fisher, and will most likely power it up...
