Thunder in October?

I know Well Seasoned Fool has been snowed on all 12 months of the year here, but I'm not sure if I've heard thunder here in October before.

Pretty strong front going through here, with some rain, and a heck of a lightshow.

This screenshot shows it going through:

It's about 37* and drizzling right now, and taking out the two trashcans almost chilled me. Expected low tonight is 33*, with snow showers, and an expected high of 60* tomorrow, with snow showers ending around 0700. Tomorrow night is forecast to also be 33*, and Thursday night is expected to be 28*, which should really knock the leaves off the trees. Some of the trees are bright yellow, and our maple is turning a dark red. The apple tree is just starting to turn, so I'll see what happens to it. Friday is supposed to be sunny and dry, and if the leaves are still on, I'll take some pix.

So, at the first rumble of thunder here the Comms Group goes into "Action Stations!", and pulls the antennas, and unplugs the power strip the radio and associated hardware are plugged in to.

  1. When I was stationed at Rhein Main AB in West Germany just south of Frankfurt am Main, I experienced "thunder snow". It was snowing really hugh flakes and there were bolts of lightning and the accompanying thunder. Really weird for a boy from the South.

    1. I had never seen the term "Thunder Snow" until we moved here and I started watching the weather much more carefully.

    2. Now tonight(the 13th), we are getting the effects of that front down here in Bandera TX. But wait...we are going to get remanents of Hurricane Pamela through the night as it runs into the front. They are predicting up to 6" of rain in isolated areas (which happens to be my "isolated" area).

    3. We have freeze warnings tonight, so Winter is well on it's way here.

    1. Thanks, Linda. She's doing very well, and has an appointment with the Orthopedic people later this week.

  3. It could be worse (and being Colorado probably will). Northern Denver suburbs are getting hit with hail. Middle son needs a newer car, could care less about appearance, so maybe some used car prices will come down.

    1. Happy shopping!

We're getting "winterized" early this year.
I've just about got the garage cleaned out so SLW can get her car in, and I'm putting the snow tires on it this weekend, along with new wiper blades, refill the washers, and replacing a burned out bulb.

Had to get the garage cleared out for that new Ariens!

  4. We had that stuff move through here last evening. Quite a lot of rain accompanied by lightning and thunder. All that was preceded with high winds. I got a heads up from NWS and we took down the flags before it all came through. Our forecast here in AZ is for sunny the rest of the week with highs in the 80s and lows in the 50's. Time to break out the long pants and sweatshirts.

    1. I went into "long pants mode" a few eeks ago. Have to roll up the garden hoses, and put the little "hats" on the faucets, and bring in some more of the firewood Mother Nature gifted us when the ash tree dropped a huge limb.

Oh....and clean out the fireplace, too!

  5. Thunder snow, in Missouri at least, was associated with much-heavier-than-usual snowfall. Where a typical winter storm might dump 8" of the white stuff, thunder snow resulted in depths closer to two feet. Up here in the Alaska, on the other hand, we don't need thunder to get two feet or more. We call it "Tuesday".

    1. HAH! I don't remember it from growing up in Illinois, so it must be a regional thing.

  6. The same thunder snow passed through here, and promptly melted, but it portends the coming of the snow and ice.

    1. I've got a couple of those sites bookmarked, and I have a lightning detector here at the house.

  8. Yep, it sure is! We get REAL weather here compared to my 35 years in SoCal, and it's fun to observe.

  9. Careful out there. It's chilly here in Texas and I'll take that.

    1. I try to be, Parson. It got down to 26* last night, but we're in for some spectacular Fall weather this week.

Bright and Sunny today, and I was able to see a few maneuvers the Blue Angels did today at the regional airport about 10 miles from here.

Got to see the diamond loop at take off, the Fleur-de-Lis (aka "Bomb Burst"), and the diamond loop before landing.

Keep it civil, please....

Gloomy, Gritty, Grey Day

At 1700 local it's as described in the headline; 30*F, 88% RH, completely overcast, snowing like crazy (small flakes, but lots of them)...
