Youch! Haven't seen things this squirrelly in quite a while:
Radio propagation in the 3~30MHz range is pretty bad tonight.
Anywhoo....Back to the Basement! where the Fisher receiver is showing positive signs of life.....
Admiral Yamamoto infamously said "You cannot invade the mainland United States. There would be a man with a rifle behind every blade of grass."
And so it should be, a nation of riflemen....
We're headed up to the in-laws in Cheyenne for the day. Hope you all have a Happy Thanksgiving.
Looks like a severe geomagnetic storm is underway according to spaceweather.com. If it's clear, look for auroras this evening. Some are being seen as far south as Nebraska.
ReplyDeleteYou can see the Aurora here. Not very bright in town, but go a few miles North and it's spectacular.
DeleteSolar flare?
ReplyDeleteA Coronal Mass Ejection. Like a flare, but bigger.
DeleteOTOH, 30m seemed good last night around here and I even snagged a new country on 30, Algeria. That was around 0245 UTC. That was around the peak of the storm.
ReplyDeleteThe Kp (4 hour average) peaked at 00 to 0300 UTC last night, according to the NOAA site:

I read in the local newspaper that red skies were visible around here last night. Last time that happened was in cycle 23 (!) which I missed as well.
I don't recall ever working Algeria. Nice catch! Anything on six down your way?
DeleteThe aurora is the cause.
ReplyDeleteWhich is caused by the energetic particles that blew out of the Sun..
DeleteTrue...
DeleteAnd the particles, and UV radiation from the Sun, "charge up" the different layers of the Ionosphere, which makes them either reflect (GOOD!) or absorb (BAD!) radio energy at various frequencies.
