Two Old Men.......

Bill gives homage to the two remaining Dolittle's Raiders.

These men, and their comrades, fit the definition of brave.

God Bless them and keep them........

  1. The generation is all but gone. The world that they lived in during their prime has been completely eclipsed.

  2. Another wonderful essay by Bill Whittle. It saddens me to see them dwindle down to none. My uncle Johnny just turned 91 and he is the last one in our family that was in WWII. These wonderful old men are quietly fading away. The world will be poorer for their loss.

    1. I hear you.

Every time I go to the Iowa to "work", I see these old guys, and marvel at them.

We've lost three people this year from the Iowa crew, gone on to their final reward. That's why we have the Iowa Veterans Project. We video and tape record these guys, and have people writing things down.

Sunday afternoons in the Officers Wardroom are special times. It's like somebody turned back the hands of time, and these guys are young again, talking about their time aboard what ever ship they served on.

  3. Those guys were insanely brave. Just trying to lift off a loaded B-25 from a carrier deck was suicidal (the idea came from a submarine officer, after all). Then the chances of making it to the airfields in China were virtually nil. But I remember reading that nobody wimped out of the flight. This knowing that the Japanese were seriously bad people to come down to on a parachute.......

  4. "Sally" Crouch always said they did nothing more than their jobs. The only reason he volunteered was that the training was in Columbia, SC... Strange but true!

Keep it civil, please....

Gloomy, Gritty, Grey Day

At 1700 local it's as described in the headline; 30*F, 88% RH, completely overcast, snowing like crazy (small flakes, but lots of them)...
