AR Type Rifle Magazine Recommendations?

WELL.....I "pulled the trigger" and bought an AR type rifle.

Specifically, I bought an S&W M&P15T.

This is very similar to my setpson's rifle that I shot a lot last July in Colorado, but has the (STOOOPID!) Kaliforniastan "Bullet Button" instead of a standard magazine release, a slightly heavier barrel, and some Picatinny rails with "flip up" iron sights in place of the forgrip.

Both my wife (who's pretty recoil-adverse) and myslef really enjoyed shooting her son's M&P15 while we were there. She was surprised how little recoil there was, and I was surprised how fast I could acquire, and hit, targets using the red dot sight on it.

I was ringing the steel no problem at 200 yards, which absolutely floored me.

This one comes with 3 snap-on handguards to use on the 90*, 180* and 270* positions so you won't chew your hands up on the rail in case you don't have any TactiCool stuff mounted on them.

I might put a weapon light on it, and will definitely get a Red Dot for it.

It comes with ONE 10-round magazine, and before I take the rifle class I signed up for, I'd like to get several more.

SO......being a complete "AR Rookie", what do you guys recommend? I've read that Magpul makes good magazines, and the guy at the gun shop said C Products also makes good ones, and to stay away from ThermoMold.

  1. Go to 44mag.com and click on AR15 / M16 for mags. Look at NHMTG aluminum 30 round W/ magpul follower. 11.99 Ea. I would say the best mags made. I find broken plastic mags often where I shoot.

    1. Thanks, I'll check them out.

Sorry, but 10 round mags ONLY for us poor suckers that line in the People's Rupblik of Kaliforniastan.

Gotta think of the children, you know.....

    1. And spend time in prison for just having them......

No thanks, I'll wait until we move to Colorado in a few years (if our Contry lasts tha long!) before I own anything other than a squeaky-clean, Kalifornstan approved, 10 round magazine....

Cool. Because you can get your 30-rounders here, NP. :)

Okay, maybe to be a bit more circumspect, stop off in Nevada on the way, and stock up. Heck, maybe in another year or so, CO voters will put some less idiotic people in office, who'll repeal the stupid thing.

    3. Yep, my stepson has 30 round mags, and they'r sweet!

The neat thing is that after we get out of Kalifornia, I can just swap a few parts and have a normal magazine release, and get some "standard capacity" magazine for it.

Calling a 30 round magazine "High Capacity" such political bullsh1t that it makes my blood boil!

    1. You live in a (relatively) Free State, Tam!

Us poor Bozos out here in Kaliforniastan have to dance to the tune the piper plays.....

  4. Magpul's P-MAGS are a good quality and I've used them since I bought my AR 5 years ago.
The 10 round ones are available from Midway USA

  5. Thanks, Mark!

I just orderted 5 of them from Midway, and if I like them, I'll get at least 5 more.

Magazines are like ammo....hard to have too much/too many!

    1. Exactly!

I have about a dozen mags on hand right now, some still in the package and stored in case of need. I am glad that living here in NV I don't have to worry about mag capacity restrictions.

  6. Late also, but ditto P-Mag. Accept no substitutes.

    1. OOOPS!

Being a complete rookie at this, I didn't realize "Magpuls" and "PMAG" were kinda-sorta the same thing.

The Magpuls I ordered from Midway are PMAGS.

Guess I did OK without knowing it.....

The mags should be here tomorrow, and the rifle and ammo arrive on Thursday.

Class is Sunday, and I'm pumped!
