He saved them from the dumpster as he figured they have some historical value, and I agreed to scan them.
They're from 1911!
They're in remarkably good condition, but some have tape holding the covers on, and some of the pages are starting to deteriorate, so I'm going to be extra careful as I scan them.
After I get them all scanned, I'll make a DVD with the magazines in pdf format, and I'll also post them on the web if I can find a place that doesn't charge.
In the meantime, here's a scan of the cover of one of them.

ReplyDeleteOne of my wife's most treasured possessions is a stack of 1915 to 1918 Electrical Experimenter magazines we picked up at the Orlando Hamfest. Edited by Hugo Gernsback (! I had no idea) and a really amazing collection of looks into the future. "Some day we will dry our clothes using electricity", "could electrical machines replace soldiers in war?", "just as today no New England home would be without heat, someday no home will be without a cooling system to make summers more bearable".

I haven't looked at all of these yet, (there's about 10 of them), but one thing I noticed is that the Gernsback name appears in the later ones.
ReplyDeleteAlso, some of them are a lot more 'fragile' than I first thought. I'm almost afraid that when I open them flat to place on my scanner that the spine may break.
Well....if they get damaged scanning, at least we'll have a digital copy of them, and once something gets tossed on the web, it seems to loive forever.
